What is the Community Trap Loan Scheme?
For red squirrels to return to the Knowsley Estate and surrounding areas, grey squirrels must be removed, and we cannot hope to achieve this without the support of local residents through a Community Trap Loan Scheme (CTLS). If you live or have land within Knowsley, St Helens, West Lancashire or Sefton you are eligible for the CTLS. If you are unsure as to your eligibility, please get in touch.
The trap you receive will be a live-catch trap for the purpose of trapping grey squirrels for humane dispatch. You can choose to either dispatch yourself (in which case, full training will be provided) or have one of our trained Red Ranger volunteers come and dispatch for you.
If having a trap on your property isn’t for you, there’s lots of other ways you can help Reclaiming Reds – click here for more information. However, the more traps we have our in the community, the more conservation impact we will have. Red squirrels are endangered in Britain and without conservation intervention they will likely go extinct in England in the next 10 years. Please visit UK Squirrels and FAQs to find out more.
One final important thing to consider is that if you choose to have a trap, it is illegal to release a grey squirrel once it has been caught.
If you would like to sign up to our Community Trap Loan Scheme please fill out the form below and a member of our team will be in touch to let you know if you are eligible.
Your involvement in this project is greatly appreciated, together we can make Knowsley a place where reds thrive.
We are pausing the community trap loan scheme at this time.
You can enter your details below and we will be in contact when we resume.
